Centralization and Y2K.(impact of Year 2000 computer problem on consolidation and centralization in brewing industry)

Who doesn't know that consolidation is running rampant in the beer business? As breweries become more and more aggressive in encouraging the smaller distributors to become absorbed by the larger distributors, the key phrase seems to be "buy or sell." There appears to be no middle ground. Consequently, the distributors that are the "buyers" are becoming "super distributors." The challenge, for them, is to control this rapid growth, and at the same time, increase sales and profitability. The keyword is Control.

This consolidation and need for control has spawned the requirement for centralization. My company, DCI, has met this demand with a product called Routewan, which is based upon Citrix Winframe technology. Routewan allows a user to utilize PC's and PC Software connected as both a Local Area Network (LAN) and as a Wide Area Network (WAN). With the intense competition in technology, the cost for the necessary components to make this a reality, have come tumbling down. More and more businesses are turning to WAN's to centralize their PC-based systems. The key to Routewan is that only screen images are transmitted from the host server to the remote PC's. All of the processing, even that requested by the remote PC, is performed locally. And, this processing can even be done through the Internet!

During 1999, consolidation and centralization will become even more complex due to the issues presented by the Millennium changeover. Wholesalers will be faced with a multitude of concerns relative to getting prepared for Y2K. Those that "keep their eyes wide open" should be successful. The Y2K issue is multi-faceted. We should not think of it purely from a business standpoint. Never before has mankind faced an occurrence of this magnitude. It will indeed touch every aspect of our lives. For example, my wife was suggesting a family cruise to celebrate New Millennium Eve. But later she heard that the computer systems on board could potentially be a problem. Guess what family is not going on a cruise?

Make sure you ask questions. Don't assume that certain aspects of your business will be OK. Ask your vendor how they know that their hardware/software is Y2K compliant. What tests have they run to insure compliance? Align yourself with vendors you trust and respect. Be mindful of your purchases during the year and take careful stock of those things that you have purchased in the past. You don't want to be penny wise and pound foolish. If you have equipment that your business depends on, and you're not sure it's Y2K compliant, be mentally prepared to replace it. You have to weigh the cost of replacement against the possible cost of malfunction. These are tough decisions, but nonetheless, ones that need to be made. Don't focus on cost containment - focus on being prepared!

Title beckons for Inter in San Siro showdown.

INTER MILAN will retain their title if they beat AC Milan in next Sunday's Milan derby after their latest victory over Cagliari. But Roma made sure the title race goes on for another week after thumping struggling Torino 4-1. However, Inter boss Roberto Mancini insists the Milan Derby is not crucial to his side's hopes of claiming the third straight Scudetto.

"It doesn't matter when we win it, just that we make the title ours," said Mancini. "If it comes against Milan then that's fine, otherwise we'll try in the following two games." Looking to stay well ahead of the chasing pack, Inter survived an early scare after their defence parted to present Cagliari's Alessandro Matri with a great chance, but he shot wide.

And the visitors were made to pay when Argentine striker Julio Cruz headed home a Patrick Vieira cross to put Mancini's champions-elect in front. Inter continued to look comfortable and wrapped up another three points when Italian defender Marco Materazzi headed home a corner eight minutes from time.

Cagliari restored some face with a last minute goal from Davide Biondini, but it was too little to late, as Mancini's men continued their march towards another Scudetto. And it means, regardless of Mancini's comments, next week's Milan derby should be a classic with Inter looking to wrap up the title and neighbours AC chasing the final Champions League place in Serie A.

Carlo Ancelotti's side seem to be hitting form at the right time, following up last week's 5-1 win over Reggina with a 4-1 mauling of struggling Livorno yesterday. Filippo Inzaghi poached a goal from close range on 23 minutes when he converted Kaka's pass following good work from Andrea Pirlo and Clarence Seedorf.

Two headers gave Inzaghi his hat-trick before veteran Dutch midfielder Seedorf scored a fourth and Dario Knezevic gave the hosts a consolation. Fiorentina stay narrowly ahead of Milan in the race for fourth as they were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Sampdoria, who are also in the hunt for that coveted fourth place. Fiorentina fell behind to Cristian Maggio's goal, but Christian Vieri equalised and Adrian Mutu gave the hosts the lead from the spot. However Daniele Gastaldello struck three minutes into stoppage time.

Juventus secured Champions League football for next season with a 5-2 defeat of Lazio, while Roma hammered Torino. And Roma manager Luciano Spalletti is not given up on the title. He said: "Until the mathematics rule us out of we will continue to fight."

Cox Teams with Business Customers for Global Internet Test on World IPv6 Day.

ATLANTA, June 6, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- On June 8, Cox Business and several of the company's customers will participate in the first global-scale test of next generation Internet addresses. World IPv6 Day is coordinated by The Internet Society (ISOC) to encourage adoption of IPv6 Internet addresses.

Similar to the 7-to-10-digit phone number migration required in large metro areas, the rapid growth of online devices and applications is pushing the current Internet address schema (IPv4) to its limits. IPv6 has a robust address space and consists of 128 bits as compared to 32 bits in IPv4 - resulting in approximately 340 undecillion (5 x 10(38)) IPv6 addresses versus the 4.2 billion available through IPv4.

In 2010, Cox began exchanging native IPv4 and IPv6 traffic dual-stack with select business customers and is now conducting residential service trials with Cox employees. The global IPv6 transition will take years to complete, therefore it is important to demonstrate the ability to support both IPv4 and IPv6 simultaneously to ensure no service interruptions.

"We are testing IPv6 with Cox Business customers early to ensure that they can provide a consistent experience to their end users," said Jeff Finkelstein, senior director of architecture, Cox Communications. "Cox's dual-stack IPv6 deployment allows customers the ability to continue leveraging current IPv4 capability while incrementally adding the IPv6 support required for the next generation of network devices and applications."

Cox Business customers participating in World IPv6 Day include ARIN, FastQ Communications, InsureMyTrip, Jefferson Lab, Kwikom, Login and Promptlink. These businesses will access multiple Web sites running IPv6 on World IPv6 Day and monitor interoperability with their internal systems. Anecdotes will be used to determine successful points of integration and highlight opportunities for improvement as the global transition approaches.

IPv4 address space is expected to be depleted in 2012, when all Internet customers must begin slowly migrating their devices and content to IPv6. Cox's core network is fully IPv6 compliant and the company is transitioning the network edge and support infrastructure to meet customer demand.

"Using a voice analogy, when someone makes a call you want to make sure the phone rings on the other end," continued Finkelstein. "Cox is deploying support for IPv6 in a way that is transparent to the customer experience and is working to ensure all networks, systems and products are fully IPv6-enabled."
