Centralization and Y2K.(impact of Year 2000 computer problem on consolidation and centralization in brewing industry)

Who doesn't know that consolidation is running rampant in the beer business? As breweries become more and more aggressive in encouraging the smaller distributors to become absorbed by the larger distributors, the key phrase seems to be "buy or sell." There appears to be no middle ground. Consequently, the distributors that are the "buyers" are becoming "super distributors." The challenge, for them, is to control this rapid growth, and at the same time, increase sales and profitability. The keyword is Control.

This consolidation and need for control has spawned the requirement for centralization. My company, DCI, has met this demand with a product called Routewan, which is based upon Citrix Winframe technology. Routewan allows a user to utilize PC's and PC Software connected as both a Local Area Network (LAN) and as a Wide Area Network (WAN). With the intense competition in technology, the cost for the necessary components to make this a reality, have come tumbling down. More and more businesses are turning to WAN's to centralize their PC-based systems. The key to Routewan is that only screen images are transmitted from the host server to the remote PC's. All of the processing, even that requested by the remote PC, is performed locally. And, this processing can even be done through the Internet!

During 1999, consolidation and centralization will become even more complex due to the issues presented by the Millennium changeover. Wholesalers will be faced with a multitude of concerns relative to getting prepared for Y2K. Those that "keep their eyes wide open" should be successful. The Y2K issue is multi-faceted. We should not think of it purely from a business standpoint. Never before has mankind faced an occurrence of this magnitude. It will indeed touch every aspect of our lives. For example, my wife was suggesting a family cruise to celebrate New Millennium Eve. But later she heard that the computer systems on board could potentially be a problem. Guess what family is not going on a cruise?

Make sure you ask questions. Don't assume that certain aspects of your business will be OK. Ask your vendor how they know that their hardware/software is Y2K compliant. What tests have they run to insure compliance? Align yourself with vendors you trust and respect. Be mindful of your purchases during the year and take careful stock of those things that you have purchased in the past. You don't want to be penny wise and pound foolish. If you have equipment that your business depends on, and you're not sure it's Y2K compliant, be mentally prepared to replace it. You have to weigh the cost of replacement against the possible cost of malfunction. These are tough decisions, but nonetheless, ones that need to be made. Don't focus on cost containment - focus on being prepared!

Title beckons for Inter in San Siro showdown.

INTER MILAN will retain their title if they beat AC Milan in next Sunday's Milan derby after their latest victory over Cagliari. But Roma made sure the title race goes on for another week after thumping struggling Torino 4-1. However, Inter boss Roberto Mancini insists the Milan Derby is not crucial to his side's hopes of claiming the third straight Scudetto.

"It doesn't matter when we win it, just that we make the title ours," said Mancini. "If it comes against Milan then that's fine, otherwise we'll try in the following two games." Looking to stay well ahead of the chasing pack, Inter survived an early scare after their defence parted to present Cagliari's Alessandro Matri with a great chance, but he shot wide.

And the visitors were made to pay when Argentine striker Julio Cruz headed home a Patrick Vieira cross to put Mancini's champions-elect in front. Inter continued to look comfortable and wrapped up another three points when Italian defender Marco Materazzi headed home a corner eight minutes from time.

Cagliari restored some face with a last minute goal from Davide Biondini, but it was too little to late, as Mancini's men continued their march towards another Scudetto. And it means, regardless of Mancini's comments, next week's Milan derby should be a classic with Inter looking to wrap up the title and neighbours AC chasing the final Champions League place in Serie A.

Carlo Ancelotti's side seem to be hitting form at the right time, following up last week's 5-1 win over Reggina with a 4-1 mauling of struggling Livorno yesterday. Filippo Inzaghi poached a goal from close range on 23 minutes when he converted Kaka's pass following good work from Andrea Pirlo and Clarence Seedorf.

Two headers gave Inzaghi his hat-trick before veteran Dutch midfielder Seedorf scored a fourth and Dario Knezevic gave the hosts a consolation. Fiorentina stay narrowly ahead of Milan in the race for fourth as they were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Sampdoria, who are also in the hunt for that coveted fourth place. Fiorentina fell behind to Cristian Maggio's goal, but Christian Vieri equalised and Adrian Mutu gave the hosts the lead from the spot. However Daniele Gastaldello struck three minutes into stoppage time.

Juventus secured Champions League football for next season with a 5-2 defeat of Lazio, while Roma hammered Torino. And Roma manager Luciano Spalletti is not given up on the title. He said: "Until the mathematics rule us out of we will continue to fight."

Cox Teams with Business Customers for Global Internet Test on World IPv6 Day.

ATLANTA, June 6, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- On June 8, Cox Business and several of the company's customers will participate in the first global-scale test of next generation Internet addresses. World IPv6 Day is coordinated by The Internet Society (ISOC) to encourage adoption of IPv6 Internet addresses.

Similar to the 7-to-10-digit phone number migration required in large metro areas, the rapid growth of online devices and applications is pushing the current Internet address schema (IPv4) to its limits. IPv6 has a robust address space and consists of 128 bits as compared to 32 bits in IPv4 - resulting in approximately 340 undecillion (5 x 10(38)) IPv6 addresses versus the 4.2 billion available through IPv4.

In 2010, Cox began exchanging native IPv4 and IPv6 traffic dual-stack with select business customers and is now conducting residential service trials with Cox employees. The global IPv6 transition will take years to complete, therefore it is important to demonstrate the ability to support both IPv4 and IPv6 simultaneously to ensure no service interruptions.

"We are testing IPv6 with Cox Business customers early to ensure that they can provide a consistent experience to their end users," said Jeff Finkelstein, senior director of architecture, Cox Communications. "Cox's dual-stack IPv6 deployment allows customers the ability to continue leveraging current IPv4 capability while incrementally adding the IPv6 support required for the next generation of network devices and applications."

Cox Business customers participating in World IPv6 Day include ARIN, FastQ Communications, InsureMyTrip, Jefferson Lab, Kwikom, Login and Promptlink. These businesses will access multiple Web sites running IPv6 on World IPv6 Day and monitor interoperability with their internal systems. Anecdotes will be used to determine successful points of integration and highlight opportunities for improvement as the global transition approaches.

IPv4 address space is expected to be depleted in 2012, when all Internet customers must begin slowly migrating their devices and content to IPv6. Cox's core network is fully IPv6 compliant and the company is transitioning the network edge and support infrastructure to meet customer demand.

"Using a voice analogy, when someone makes a call you want to make sure the phone rings on the other end," continued Finkelstein. "Cox is deploying support for IPv6 in a way that is transparent to the customer experience and is working to ensure all networks, systems and products are fully IPv6-enabled."

To learn more about IPv6, World IPv6 Day and Cox's role in the transition listen to the most recent Cox Business Report show on BlogTalkRadio.

New Intel[R] Atom[TM] Processor for Tablets Spurs Companion Computing Device Innovation.

Company Outlines Plans to Accelerate Intel Manufacturing Lead with Intel[R] Atom[TM] Processor Family and Move Faster than Moore's Law

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

* Over 35 innovative "Oak Trail" design wins from customers including Evolve III*, Fujitsu Limited*, Lenovo*, Motion Computing*, Razer*, and Viliv* available starting in May and throughout 2011.

* "Cedar Trail," Intel's upcoming netbook and entry-level desktop platform, will deliver features including Intel[R] Wireless Music, Intel[R] Wireless Display, PC Synch and Fast Boot, as well as improvements in media, graphics and power consumption.

* Intel is accelerating its Atom product line to move faster than Moore's law, bringing new products to market on three process technologies in the next 3 years.

* Atom platforms harness Intel's unique "operating system of choice" strategy for Google* Chrome* and Android*, MeeGo* and Windows*, delivering personalized experiences.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Intel Corporation today announced that the Intel[R] Atom[TM] platform, formerly codenamed "Oak Trail," is now available and will be in devices starting in May and throughout 2011. Over 35 innovative tablet and hybrid designs from companies including Evolve III*, Fujitsu Limited*, Lenovo*, Motion Computing*, Razer*, and Viliv* are based on "Oak Trail" and running a variety of operating systems.

In addition, at the Intel Developer Forum in Beijing, the company will give a sneak peak of its next-generation, 32nm Intel Atom platform, currently codenamed "Cedar Trail." This solution will help to enable a new wave of fanless, cool and quiet, sleek and innovative netbooks, entry-level desktops and all-in-one designs.

"The new Intel Atom 'Oak Trail' platform, with 'Cedar Trail' to follow, are examples of our continued commitment to bring amazing personal and mobile experiences to netbook and tablet devices, delivering architectural enhancements for longer battery life and greater performance," said Doug Davis, vice president and general manager of the Netbook and Tablet Group at Intel. "We are accelerating the Intel Atom product line to now move faster than Moore's law, bringing new products to market on three process technologies in the next 3 years."

The new Intel Atom processor Z670, part of the "Oak Trail" platform, delivers improved video playback, fast Internet browsing and longer battery life, without sacrificing performance. The rich media experience available with "Oak Trail" includes support for 1080p video decode, as well as HDMI. The platform also supports Adobe* Flash, enabling rich content and Flash-based gaming.

With these significant improvements in power-efficient performance, the Intel Atom processor Z670 allows applications to run on various operating systems, including Google* Android*, MeeGo* and Windows*. This unique flexibility delivers both new experiences and more choice when it comes to tablets and hybrid designs that combine the best features of the netbook and tablet together.

The platform also helps deliver smaller, thinner and more efficient devices by packing integrated graphics and the memory controller directly onto the processor die. The processor is 60 percent smaller than previous generations with a lower-power design for fanless devices as well as up to all-day battery life1. Additional features include Intel[R] Enhanced Deeper Sleep that saves more power during periods of inactivity as well as optimized Intel SpeedStep[R] technology. An integrated HD decode engine enables smooth 1080p HD video playback at a fraction of the power consumption.

In addition, Intel Atom Z670 processors come with the Intel[R] SM35 Express Chipset, delivering a lead-free2, halogen-free3 design with high-speed USB 2.0 for greater performance and Intel[R] High-Definition Audio to enable premium home theater sound.

Also ideal for small form-factor and portable embedded designs, the platform provides an excellent solution for a range of tablets in retail, medical and industrial applications. Solutions such as mobile clinical assistants allow medical staff to directly input data into patients' electronic files and avoid paper charting. This can result in a reduction in errors, better workflow, higher productivity and reduced paper handling and overhead costs. In addition to the Intel Atom Z670, Intel is offering the Intel[R] Atom(TM)processor Z650 for embedded devices with 7-year lifecycle support on Windows and MeeGo operating systems.

Based on Intel's leading-edge 32nm process technology, the next-generation "Cedar Trail" platform will feature improvements in graphics capabilities including Blu-ray 2.0 support, a dedicated media engine for full 1080p playback and additional digital display options including HDMI output and DisplayPort. New features will include Intel[R] Wireless Music, Intel[R] Wireless Display, PC Synch and Fast Boot. In addition, the enhancements made in power consumption and TDP will enable fanless designs with longer battery life. This means great acoustics without the hum of a fan and improved ruggedness and aesthetics of the design. Intel is currently sampling "Cedar Trail" to all major OEMs and ODMs. Users can look forward to a new generation of innovative mobile and desktop designs based on the "Cedar Trail" platform in the second half of 2011.

We expect prices will rise even higher because of the large demand from China and India. The Company should be strategically poised to take advantage of these rising coal prices. Production may begin by early April, if not sooner, barring any unforeseen circumstances."

Grossman, Favre both face scrutiny.

Byline: Gary D'amato

LAKE FOREST, Ill. _ When it comes to number of touchdown passes and completions, size of trophy case and paycheck, amount of respect and admiration _ heck, when it comes to any and every way to measure a quarterback _ Rex Grossman and Brett Favre are on opposite ends of the spectrum.

In Grossman, the Chicago Bears have an unanswered question, a former first-round draft pick who hasn't been able to stay on the field long enough to offer anything more than a teasing glimpse of his potential.

In Favre, the Green Bay Packers have an icon, one of the few players in the National Football League instantly identifiable by his jersey number alone.

``I'm out for respect, trying to get established, and he's about the most established guy in the league,'' Grossman said. ``Everyone knows what he can do. I think we're pretty different in that aspect.''

But going into the season opener for both teams at 3:15 p.m. on Sunday at Lambeau Field, the quarterbacks have one thing in common: They are under intense scrutiny and likely will be held accountable to a large degree for the success or failure of their teams this season.

The Bears, led by a ball-hawking defense that ranked No. 2 in the NFL and a running game that ranked eighth, won the NFC North last year and are favored to win the division again.

But Chicago finished 31st in passing, averaged just 16.25 points per game and lost in the divisional round of the playoffs. It's no secret the Bears must get more production from the passing game to get to the next level.

``We need to play great defense like we've played in the past and we need to make improvements on the offensive side of the ball,'' coach Lovie Smith said. ``In order for us to reach our goals this year, we have to have both.''

Enter Grossman, 26, the 22nd pick in the 2003 draft out of the University of Florida. After going 2-1 as a starter late in his rookie season and throwing just one interception in 72 attempts, he was embraced by Bears fans who had suffered through too many years watching the likes of Kordell Stewart, Cade McNown and Shane Matthews.

But in Week 3 of what was to be his breakout year in 2004, Grossman suffered a season-ending knee injury while diving for the end zone on his first (and only) career touchdown run.

Then, last year, he suffered a broken ankle in an exhibition game and didn't return until the 15th game of the regular season. He led the Bears to victories over Atlanta and the Packers, but completed just 17 of 41 passes in the 29-21 playoff loss to Carolina at Soldier Field.

The bottom line is that after three years in the league, Grossman has played in just eight games, started seven (4-3 record) and has a 68.8 rating.

In Internet chat rooms, some Bears fans have taken to calling him ``Rex Glassman'' or ``Wrecks Grossman'' because of his injury history.

``No, not at all,'' Grossman said when asked if he was upset by his critics. ``I've played eight games, so there's not a lot to go on. Sometimes I feel like I'm judged on every pass I make, whether it's a good one or a bad one. I make a good pass, I'm a good quarterback. I make a bad pass, I'm a bad quarterback. That's just how it is when you're not really established.''

Adding to the intrigue is that Brian Griese, who joined the Bears as a free agent in March, is a proven veteran with a 39-33 record as a starter in Denver and Tampa Bay.

In the exhibition season, the 31-year-old Griese completed 19 of 28 passes (67.2 percent) with four touchdowns, no interceptions and a 141.7 rating. He clearly outplayed Grossman, who went 28 for 54 (51.9 percent) with one touchdown, two interceptions and a 60.7 rating.

``Rex is having a hard time getting the timing down with the offense,'' wide receiver Mark Bradley admitted last week in the locker room.

Offensive coordinator Ron Turner said he thought Grossman still would become a good player in the league.

``Is Rex there? Yeah, I think so,'' Turner said. ``But I think he'll continue to get better. I don't think he's where he wants to be or where he's going to be but I think he has a good enough understanding right now for us to go out and hopefully execute and be productive.''

Turner said competition with Griese and with second-year quarterback Kyle Orton, who went 10-5 as a rookie starter last year, had pushed Grossman.

``Rex knows what Brian and Kyle can do,'' Turner said. ``He knows we won 10 games with Kyle so he knows we've got someone there that we can win games with and that we have confidence in. He knows Brian is a good player. Brian has shown that in practice and in games. He's sharp and he's accurate and he can move this team and direct this offense.

``So I think Rex sees that and says, `Hey, I'd better be on top of my game. I'd better study and prepare and bring my ``A'' game every day.' ''

Though Grossman hasn't played much, he has twice won games at Lambeau Field. In fact, the Bears swept the Packers last year for the first time since 1991 and have won three of the last four meetings after winning just two of the previous 20.

``It's just an unbelievable time in my life, to have this opportunity to be the starting quarterback for the Chicago Bears and to go up to Lambeau Field and play the Packers,'' Grossman said. ``It's a special thing and it's a beautiful thing, you know what I mean?''

Meanwhile, 180 miles to the north, Favre is going into his 16th NFL season and his 15th as the Packers' starter. He is coming off a forgettable year in which he threw a career-high 29 interceptions and had a career-low 70.9 rating as the Packers went 4-12.

Though general manager Ted Thompson avoids using the word ``rebuilding,'' the Packers' roster skews young and the team will start three rookies on offense Sunday, including guards Jason Spitz and Tony Moll.

Favre turns 37 on Oct. 10 and some wonder whether he's the right quarterback for this team. Waiting in the wings is second-year pro Aaron Rodgers, who had a 101.1 rating in the exhibition season (Favre's was 93.4).

The Bears, who intercepted Favre six times in the two games last year, were careful not to give the Packers bulletin-board material.

When asked how to rattle Favre, Bears defensive end Alex Brown said, ``I have no idea. You find that tape, let us have it. Please. Brett Favre is a Hall of Fame quarterback. He's obviously done something right for a long time. He can easily go out and throw 400 yards on you if you don't watch out.''

The Bears will try to take away deep throws with their umbrella Cover 2 defense and force Favre to dump short passes, which plays into the hands of their speedy linebackers.

``Our whole deal is, we want the quarterback to not be comfortable in the pocket,'' linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo said. ``We want three-step passes. We want to have him throw the underneath game. We play everything long to short so the faster he gets the ball out, the better it is for us.''

Some would say Favre, who has started 221 consecutive games and has won three MVP trophies and a Super Bowl, has nothing left to prove. But any time a player steps onto the field, there's something to prove.

At opposite ends of their careers, Grossman and Favre are trying to prove their critics wrong.

``I think people are doubting me and that's a motivating factor for me,'' Grossman said. ``And I'm sure it's the same for him right now.''

Municipal broadband debate gains fervor: city and rural needs clash amid the escalating politics.(Telecom-planet)

It might seem somewhat a comedown for the nation's telecom commentariat, but the big issue in telecommunications for 2005 is municipal broadband provision. Should municipal government be involved in broadband provision or not? Some reports suggest that upwards of 100 such projects are already planned or deployed.

It certainly has attracted much attention from state governments and telecom company lobbyists. By various estimates, close to 20 states are moving to prevent their county and city authorities entering the broadband field. This has largely been at the prompting of telecom lobbyists concerned about the prospect of new competition. State governments might be winning the legal battle, but municipal advocates are certainly claiming the high ground, aided and abetted by their friends in the technology media such as Esme Vos of muniwireless.com, Mike Masnick of Techndirt Wireless and Lawrence Lessig of Wired.

Lessig recently ridiculed the anti-municipal groups, inferring that they think they are engaged in an anti-communist crusade. Centerpiece of their counter-attack is a report published by the New Millennium Research Council featuring contributions from the U.S. Internet Industry Association and free enterprise think tanks such as the Heartland Institute.

This collection of polemical essays is actually well argued and footnoted, but it committed one big crime in the eyes of the critics: It was ultimately funded by telcos and others, who (shock, horror) didn't overtly advertise their involvement.

BUILDING A CASE

The truth, as with most of these types of absolutist debates, lies somewhere in the middle. Municipal network advocates have a good case for the idea that a government's telecom usage should be standardized on one portable wireless mesh network, as is the case with many of these proposals. There are undoubted efficiencies and leaps of functional productivity that can be achieved through such investment. And it's hardly radical to suggest that access to such networks should be offered on a limited public basis in locales such as libraries. After all, we've never heard Borders complain that a public library hurt sales.

Likewise, there are genuinely rural and remote counties that might have to wait years for competitive broadband provision. These locales are no stranger to public subsidy and investment in the fields of telecom and cable network provision. Extending that to broadband is hardly unorthodox.

However, it's another thing to suggest that the dense demographics of areas such as San Francisco, New York City and Los Angeles suffer under the tyranny of broadband market failure. But that's exactly the justification used by municipal authorities in such locales.

San Francisco wants to build a fiber network through its sewers and extend free access to citizens via wireless tails. That's right, free, a ratepayer-funded subsidy to the broadband user from the non-broadband user. Local observers of the S.F. authorities have responded with scathing critiques in the city's press.

COMPLEX CASE

While one should always be skeptical of community-geared rhetoric from the private sector, it is also prudent to be skeptical of legacy-enhancing proposals from governments, particularly when they involve the provision of services in which they clearly lack skill sets or legitimacy. No doubt there are many mayors who think broadband provision is a natural fit with trash-collection and park mowing, but the business case for broadband is actually quite complex.

With all due respect to mayoral eminences such as Mr. Newsom of San Francisco and Mr. Bloomberg of N.Y.C, it might be a good idea to leave these problems to such types as Mr. Whitacre.
